- $30,000 is in range for a minor, midrange refresh: the 2025 Cost vs. Value report prices that job at $28,579 in Sarasota and $28,458 nationally. It is far below the report’s Sarasota figure for a major midrange remodel.
- The 2026 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study found national median spending of about $20,000 for minor and $55,000 for major kitchen renovations, as reported by homeowners.
- Scope matters most: whether cabinets are replaced or kept, whether the layout, plumbing or electrical changes, and what the countertops are.
- Plan a contingency (This Old House advises about 20%; one of its builders suggests 15% to 20%) and get a written, itemized scope before you commit.

Is $30,000 enough for a kitchen remodel in Florida?
It is enough for a minor remodel of an average-size kitchen, and usually not enough for a full remodel with new cabinets, stone countertops or a changed layout. A useful yardstick is the Cost vs. Value report from the JLC Group, the publisher of Remodeling magazine. Tampa is not among the Florida markets in its 2025 edition, so Sarasota is the nearest Gulf Coast reference. Treat the figures as reference points for scope, not as quotes: each describes a defined 200-square-foot kitchen with 30 linear feet of cabinetry.

What do other published estimates say?
Other sources land lower or in between because each measures something different. The 2026 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, as reported by CultureMap Houston, found national medians of about $20,000 for minor and $55,000 for major renovations. Axios Tampa Bay, citing Angi data from 2012 to 2022, put a typical Tampa Bay renovation at $13,000 to $36,000, so today’s prices are likely higher. A $30,000 budget sits inside that Tampa Bay range and between Houzz’s two medians, which is why the honest answer depends on scope. The full comparison, with sources and caveats, is in our guide to kitchen remodel cost in Tampa Bay.
What does $30,000 actually buy?
Think of $30,000 as a refresh budget: it can replace what you touch most while keeping the layout and the cabinet boxes. The Cost vs. Value minor remodel keeps sound cabinet boxes and adds new shaker-style wood fronts, drawer fronts and hardware, a new range and refrigerator, new laminate countertops, a midpriced sink and faucet, resilient flooring and paint. Even the report’s major midrange job uses laminate countertops. Stone appears only in the upscale job.

| Scope | Fits $30,000? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic refresh: paint, hardware, lighting, backsplash, faucet | Yes, with room to spare | Sits well under the published minor-remodel figures |
| Minor remodel as Cost vs. Value defines it: new fronts, appliances, laminate counters, flooring | At the limit | The $28,579 Sarasota figure leaves about $1,400 of margin and no room for stone |
| New cabinets and stone countertops in the same layout | Unlikely in a typical-size kitchen | Houzz’s median for major remodels of smaller kitchens is $46,000, and the report’s midrange major job costs far more |
| Moving walls, sinks or ranges | Rarely | Adds engineering, framing, permits and licensed plumbing and electrical work |
The last column is our reading of the published figures, not a quote for your kitchen.

What makes a Florida kitchen cost more or less?
Scope sets the price: what is replaced, what moves and how custom the materials are. The Cost vs. Value authors warn that small differences in size, scope or finishes can change a price dramatically. Five factors do most of the work.
- Cabinets. Keeping sound boxes and replacing fronts is the difference between the report’s minor job and its major jobs, which use new semi-custom or custom cabinetry.
- Countertops. Laminate appears in both midrange jobs and stone only in the upscale one, so choosing quartz or other stone moves you up a tier.
- Layout. Moving or opening a wall can bring engineering, framing and permit review.
- Plumbing and electrical. Florida requires contractors to subcontract electrical, mechanical and plumbing work unless they hold those trade licenses (s. 489.113), so moving a sink or adding circuits means licensed-trade labor.
- Appliances. The minor job includes a new range and refrigerator, while built-in refrigerators and commercial-grade cooktops appear in the upscale job.
How do I make $30,000 go further?
Decide what to keep, then spend on what you use every day. Work through these steps before you ask for quotes.

- 01
Keep the layout
Leaving the sink, range and walls where they are avoids the most expensive line items.
- 02
Check the cabinet boxes
If the boxes are sound, new fronts and hardware cost less than new cabinetry. Ask a cabinet maker to assess them.
- 03
Choose surfaces and appliances first
Exact selections let a contractor price the real job instead of an allowance.
- 04
Consider phasing
The Cost vs. Value authors note that homeowners often scale back plans or do the work in phases to spread the cost. See how phasing affects the schedule before you commit.
- 05
Compare itemized quotes
Ask each contractor to price the same written scope so differences are visible.
How do I avoid going over budget?
Set aside a contingency, fix the scope in writing and approve every change in writing. This Old House advises setting aside 20% of your budget for unexpected expenses. One of its builders suggests 15% to 20% and calls 10% the bare minimum for older homes. On a $30,000 budget, a 15% to 20% reserve means planning the scope at roughly $24,000 to $25,500.
- Get a written scope with allowances named, so you know which prices are placeholders.
- Tie payments to completed work. If you pay more than 10% of the price up front, Florida requires the contractor to apply for needed permits within 30 days and start work within 90 days after they issue, unless there is just cause or you agree otherwise in writing (s. 489.126).
- Require a written change order before any extra work begins.
Does spending more pay back when you sell?
Usually not dollar for dollar, and smaller remodels recoup the most in the Cost vs. Value data. Realtors surveyed for the 2025 report estimated that the minor midrange remodel recoups 104.4% of its cost in Sarasota, the major midrange job 49.7% and the upscale job 35.6%. These are survey estimates, and the publisher cautions that the report predicts a specific address less well than it describes the national market. Resale is one factor among several.
