- Surveys measure share, not “dated.” In the 2026 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study (1,780 Houzz users, surveyed July 2025), wood cabinets edged past white, and white lost share.
- Transitional design and neutral colors lead in NKBA’s 2026 report (released September 2025), and trade coverage of NKBA’s newer 2027 report again puts neutrals first.
- Bright accents such as millennial pink, bright orange and bright red rank among the lowest colors in NKBA’s 2026 report; greens and blues rank high.
- Quartz led the Houzz homeowner survey (2025 edition, surveyed mid-2024) while losing share; in a trade-press summary of NKBA’s 2027 report, designers expect quartzite to be popular slightly more often than quartz.
- In Florida, humidity, sun and salt air decide how a finish ages. Put trends in layers that are cheap to change.

Which kitchen trends will be outdated in 2026?
No survey can say what will look dated, but the data show which choices are losing share: all-white cabinets, white backsplashes and, in the earlier 2025 edition (surveyed mid-2024), engineered quartz. In the 2026 Houzz study 41% of renovating homeowners cited dissatisfaction with the old kitchen style, close to the 38% who cited a deteriorating or dysfunctional kitchen. A falling share is not a verdict: white cabinets remain a close second, and white is still the top countertop color at 37%.
| Choice | What the data show | Source and survey year |
|---|---|---|
| White cabinets | 28%, down 5 points; wood is first at 29%, up 6 | Houzz 2026 (surveyed July 2025) |
| White backsplash | 31%, down 4 points; off-white up 4 points | Houzz 2026 (surveyed July 2025) |
| Wood grain vs painted cabinets | 59% of respondents call wood grain a growing trend and say it surpasses painted cabinets; no figure is given for painted cabinets | NKBA 2026 report (September 2025; 634 professionals) |
| Engineered quartz counters | 39%, down 7 points but still first | Houzz 2025 edition (surveyed mid-2024) |
| Millennial pink, bright orange, bright red | Among the lowest-ranked colors (6% to 11%) | NKBA 2026 report (September 2025) |
Read the table as direction, not a ban: the wood-grain row shows a direction, not a decline of painted cabinets. These are surveys, not sales data.
What looks timeless in 2026?
Transitional design, neutral colors, good light and smart storage hold up most consistently in the data. In NKBA’s 2026 report (September 2025) 72% of professionals named transitional, timeless design, ahead of contemporary and minimalist, and 96% named neutrals as the most popular colors; trade coverage of NKBA’s 2027 report (October 2026) also reports neutrals at 96%. Transitional also led among Houzz homeowners who changed their kitchen’s style. NKBA’s respondents list natural light among the most important considerations to homeowners (95%), and 94% of the kitchens upgraded in the Houzz study added specialty storage. Our reading: function ages more slowly than color.
Which colors are rising, and which are fading?
Wood tones are taking share from white; green and blue rank high with professionals, and bright accents rank among the lowest. In the 2026 Houzz study wood is the top cabinet color, then white, off-white, green and gray. NKBA’s professionals expect statement colors in backsplashes, islands and accessories, and Houzz’s April 2026 roundup of the most-saved kitchen photos, an editorial ranking, shows blue and green cabinets, white oak and brass accents. A low-risk way to use a bold color is where it is cheap to change: wall paint, an island or accessories.
Doors, hardware and fixtures: what is current?
Shaker led door styles in the 2025 edition of the Houzz study (surveyed mid-2024), and flat slab doors are gaining with professionals, so both are current; choose on looks and cleaning, not fashion. In that edition (1,620 users, surveyed June to July 2024) Shaker led at 61%, ahead of flat-panel and raised-panel, and 69% of professionals in NKBA’s 2026 report (September 2025) said flat, slab doors are gaining. We found no 2026 door-style share. Our guide to Shaker vs slab doors, and high gloss vs matte compares them, and the cabinetry catalog lists Shaker, slim Shaker, high gloss slab and matte slab styles.
Faucet news points to curved spouts and workstation sinks, and we found no reliable survey share for hardware finishes. Hardware and finish shares were not on the primary Houzz pages we could open, so we give no percentages. Houzz’s coverage of the 2026 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show adds curved spouts, larger workstation sinks and color beyond neutrals; that is product news, not a survey. Judge any finish by how it wears and how you clean it.
Quartz, porcelain and mineral: where do they stand?
Quartz led the Houzz homeowner survey (2025 edition, surveyed mid-2024) even as its share slipped, and natural quartzite is gaining attention. In that edition engineered quartz led at 39%, down 7 points. NKBA’s 2026 report listed natural quartzite right behind quartz, and a trade-press summary of NKBA’s 2027 report (October 2026) has 78% of designers expecting quartzite to be popular for countertops and 74% quartz; Houzz’s 2026 trade-show coverage also says quartzite is gaining ground. Slab backsplashes are 28% in the 2026 Houzz data, mostly engineered quartz and quartzite. For why some people say quartz is on the decline, read quartz downsides and alternatives; our quartz surfaces page covers what to check on a sample.
Porcelain is a small slice of the Houzz slab-backsplash numbers, which shows what homeowners chose, not how it performs. Check the maker’s sheet for sun and heat limits on any slab, including porcelain. “Mineral surface” is a product label, not a standard, and we found no survey that tracks it separately, so ask for the safety data sheet and read the composition.
What changes in a Florida kitchen?
In Florida, humidity, sun and salt air decide how a finish ages, so test the material before you chase the trend. The National Weather Service defines the rainy season as May 15 to October 15 in Southwest Florida (May 25 to October 10 in the rest of West Central Florida), with dew points above 70°F, and the EPA recommends indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30% to 50%. A cabinet maker’s care guide says wood expands and contracts with moisture and that painted wood and laminates, including high gloss, can fade or discolor in direct sunlight; care guidance varies by maker, so follow the sheet for your product. That bears on two trends: wood-grain finishes and glossy fronts beside a bright window. Salt air tests exposed metal; see our guide to humid and coastal Florida kitchens. Natural light, which NKBA’s respondents list among the most important considerations to homeowners, also changes how color and sheen read, so view full-size samples at the hours you use the room.
How do I use trends without regret?
Spend trend money where change is cheap, and keep the permanent layers neutral. That is a design rule of thumb, not a survey finding.
- 01
Keep the permanent layers mainstream
Cabinet boxes, door profile, counters and floors cost the most to replace. Choose ones you would keep with a different paint color.
- 02
Put the trend in cheap layers
Paint, an island color, hardware, lighting and accessories change faster than cabinets or stone.
- 03
Choose one statement
NKBA’s professionals expect statement color in backsplashes and islands. One bold element is easier to change than three.
- 04
Test samples in your light
View full-size door and stone samples beside your windows, morning and evening.
- 05
Ask for the care sheet
Get the maker’s written guidance on heat, cleaners, sunlight and salt air.

Frequently asked questions
What kitchen trends will be outdated in 2026?
Surveys do not label trends outdated, but they show shares moving. In the 2026 Houzz study white cabinets and white backsplashes lost share while wood gained, and NKBA professionals ranked bright pink, orange and red among the lowest colors in the 2026 report. The table above gives the figures.
Is quartz going out of style?
The data show a smaller lead, not a collapse. Engineered quartz led the 2025 edition of the Houzz study (surveyed mid-2024) while losing share, and trade coverage of NKBA’s 2027 report has designers expecting quartzite slightly ahead. For the reasons people give, see quartz downsides and alternatives.
Are high gloss kitchen cabinets in style?
We found no sheen breakdown in the Houzz or NKBA material, but NKBA professionals said flat slab doors are gaining. A cabinet maker’s guide warns that sun can fade painted wood and laminates, including high gloss, so compare finishes on a full-size sample and follow the maker’s care sheet.
What kitchen colors are popular in 2026?
Neutrals lead among NKBA professionals, followed by greens and blues. In the 2026 Houzz study wood is the top cabinet color, then white and off-white.
